2008 NASCAR driver rankings: Nos. 30-21

Junior Johnson, who won 50 NASCAR races including the 1960 Daytona 500, will drive the pace car for the start of the 50th edition of “The Great American Race” on Feb. 17 at Daytona International Speedway.

In addition, seven-time 500 winner Richard Petty, the winningest driver in NASCAR history with 200 career victories, will be the honorary starter.

The 76-year-old Johnson will drive a 2008 Corvette Z06 to get the season-opening event under way.

Kevin Harvick: Open-wheel drivers will struggle

Daytona 500 champion Kevin Harvick questioned whether the successful open-wheel drivers switching to NASCAR this year will be able to make a smooth transition.

“Coming straight into the Cup Series is going to be harder than any of them would have imagined,” Harvick said on Tuesday at a luncheon in anticipation of the 50th running of Daytona on Feb. 17.

He believes they’d be better served by gaining experience in the second-tier or truck series before moving up to NASCAR’s top level.
