Hendrick, Gibbs face engine problems at Daytona

Posted by on February 13th, 2008

Those powerful, seemingly unbeatable Hendrick Motorsports cars had major engine problems Wednesday during practice for the Daytona 500.

Two-time defending NASCAR champion and pole-sitter Jimmie Johnson, four-time series champ Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Casey Mears all were forced to change engines because of a lifter problem likely caused by a bad batch of coating.

Scott Riggs, driving for Haas CNC Racing and using Hendrick power, also swapped engines.

After rough NFL year, Joe Gibbs returns to NASCAR

Posted by on February 13th, 2008

Joe Gibbs is back in NASCAR.

Quick, hide the headsets!

“We have to make sure we keep a radio out of his hands that he can actually talk on during the race,” driver Tony Stewart said. “As long as he doesn’t have a radio he can talk on, then it shouldn’t change things too much.”

He’s kidding, of course.

“Obviously, having him back around is huge,” Stewart said. “He’s a great person and a great, great leader. He’s great at motivating people and putting the right people in the right positions.

Team owners feeling financial crunch

Posted by on February 13th, 2008

If you’re looking for a sign that American stock-car racing’s success is leveling, just ask veteran driver Mark Martin if he’d ever be interested in owning a racing team.

“I’m just not going to do it,” Martin said. “I’ve worked too hard too long, and I know all about this business. I owned a team, and I went broke in 1982. I know how this deal works, even when things look really good, like two years ago.
