McMurray hangs on to secure spot in top 35

Posted by on March 30th, 2008

Jamie McMurray started near the front, ran there most of the day and then found himself backing off as the Goody’s 500 neared the finish.

Such is life these days for a NASCAR Sprint Cup driver who can be left more concerned about being in the top 35 in points than about going all-out for a victory.

McMurray arrived at Martinsville Speedway 36th in the standings, which meant he had to earn his way into the field during qualifying.

David Reutimann is still adjusting to his new ride.

Reutimann moved from the No. 00 into the No. 44 for Michael Waltrip Racing this week. The car was driven in the first five races by Dale Jarrett, who then retired.

“Sometimes I don’t even know I’m driving the car,” Reutimann said Saturday, one day after practicing and qualifying the No. 44 in 15th place for Sunday’s Goody’s 500.

Practice, he said, gave him a few moments that highligted the adjustment.
