Gordon hopes to put behind Texas disappointment

A year ago, Jeff Gordon crossed Phoenix International Raceway off the ever-dwindling list of tracks where the four-time champion has yet to win a NASCAR Sprint Cup race.

His victory in the Subway Fresh Fit 500 also was significant because it was his 76th, matching the career mark of the late Dale Earnhardt. And it also was the first of six victories by Gordon in one of best seasons of his career, even if Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson did beat him out for the title.

IRL champ bounces back from missing Cup race

A week after failing to qualify at Texas, Dario Franchitti was back in the starting lineup at Phoenix International Speedway and feeling pretty good about his NASCAR team’s improvement.

After team owner Chip Ganassi criticized the entire team following last weekend’s Texas race for not giving Franchitti and teammates Juan Pablo Montoya and Reed Sorenson equipment up to their talents, Franchitti defended his No. 40 crew.

“After last week it feels really good,” Franchitti said on Friday.
