The day after Lowe’s Motor Speedway president Humpy Wheeler announced he was retiring, the frostiness continued with his boss, Speedway Motorsports CEO Bruton Smith.
Wheeler acknowledged Thursday while it was his decision step down after 33 years at the track, he wanted to stay on in a part-time role. Smith desired a clean break, and the 69-year-old Wheeler will leave after Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600.
“Next year is the (track’s) 50th anniversary,” Wheeler said.
Kentucky Speedway moved a step closer to landing a coveted Sprint Cup Series race when Speedway Motorsports Inc. on Thursday added the track to its growing portfolio of tracks.
Just how SMI owner Bruton Smith gets that race date remains unclear, but he said he wants a Cup race in Kentucky in 2009.
Smith has battled for years with NASCAR over the awarding of Cup races, and Kentucky already has unsuccessfully sued to get its own date.
Kasey Kahne has every right to be upset with his team’s performance, but his All-Star win proves he’s not giving up, says Rea White.
Bruton Smith expanded his motorsports empire once again.
